METATARSALGIA (Pain over the ball of the foot)
Metatarsalgia is a general term denoting pain in the region of the metatarsal heads (ball of the foot). This condition usually causes a burning sensation that can be acute, recurrent or chronic and is caused by a host of various conditions including Morton's neuroma, arthritis, pes planus (flat feet), hallux abducto valgus, hammer toes and excessive pronation (the feet become misalignment and combined with poor posture roll inwards to gain ground contact, the arches become flattened).
Certainly the first line of defence for this condition is good supporting shoes which have a toe box and a low heel. Useful treatments for metatarsalgia are anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin and Ibuprofen gel/tablets. Cold ice-pack compresses can be useful in reducing any swelling with stretching exercises and massage both being beneficial.
In conjunction to these treatments, other useful treatments for Metatarsalgia are items such as gel metatarsal supports (ball of the foot), reusable gel pads/insoles and adhesive paddings as well as full length orthotic insoles.
