ANKLE PAIN

Ankle pain is usually caused from having arthritis or from Achilles tendon injuries.

OSTEOARTHRITIS & RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

There are various types of arthritis but the two most commonly found in the feet are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a localised condition and is caused due to gradual wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints. Age, excessive weight, ill-fitting shoes and trauma (injury) can all be contributory factors to osteoarthritis. In the case of Rheumatoid arthritis this is a systemic condition and has the potential to affect every joint in the body.

Arthritis is usually a very painful condition and is advisable to seek advice and treatment from your family doctor. In diagnosis of arthritis, a good complete history including blood tests are used to differentiate between one arthritis type and another. Also x-ray evaluation to view the bone structure of the foot and in more advanced cases of arthritis an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT scan (computerised axial tomography) are extremely helpful.

ACHILLES TENDON INJURIES

The Achilles tendon is vulnerable to a host of injuries which include associated bursitis, tendonitis, partial and complete ruptures. Achilles tendon problems are found in all age groups from about the age of 10 years old onwards and is often associated with vigorous walking and sporting activities. Mechanically, Achilles tendon problems are due to excessive pronation (the feet become misaligned and combined with poor posture roll inwards to gain ground contact, the arches become flattened). The increased range of movement in the ankle results in excessive strain and injury of the Achilles tendon.

Treatment of Achilles tendon injuries depends on the severity of damage. Partial tears or ruptures should have an orthopaedic evaluation for casting or surgical repair in addition to physiotherapy. The less severe injuries will benefit from rest, ice packs, massage, elasticated supports, muscle stretching and strengthening.

Orthotic insoles will help to reduce the strain on the Ankle and Achilles tendon by stabilising the heel and controlling the position of the feet.

The orthotics which we recommend for this condition are the FootSupports orthotics.
